In Guyana as in many other countries, there are four types of politicians. There are politicians who care deeply about the well-being of the citizens, the country and the economy; politicians who do not care about anyone or anything; politicians who do not care, but pretend to the people that they care; and of course, there are politicians who are incompetent and completely clueless.
The first type of politicians is the patriot. These are the men and women who care deeply about the country and about rights, equality and justice for everyone regardless of race, religion, creed or party affiliation. They will always do whatever it takes to ensure the success and progress of the country.
These politicians are a rare breed, and Guyana was blessed and also enriched to have had a few of them grace the halls of our Parliament. The quintessential examples have been former Presidents Forbes Burnham, Desmond Hoyte and Cheddi Jagan.
They were exemplary in the administration and management of the state. They cared little about political longevity and much more about the decisions that were most beneficial for the country and all its citizens. In order to be in this category, one must have unwavering integrity, class, intelligence and fearlessness to do what is necessary regardless of the political backlash. In addition to possessing all these traits, they must be practical and have visionary and transformative leadership skills.
The second type of politicians is the traitor. Simply put, a traitor is any politician who uses his/her political power to pillage and plunder the treasury and other vital resources of the country. The traitor is the type of politician that must be investigated, exposed and imprisoned preferably for long periods. These politicians are charlatans who do not deserve much of the people’s attention outside of investigations into their finances and their corrupt practices. The nation has seen many of them in the last fifteen years.
The third type of politicians is the hypocrite who for decades distorted the truth and spread propaganda. The hypocrite does not care about the people or the future of the country because he has significantly used his position to enrich himself, relatives and friends from the state resources.
The hypocrite is dishonest and pretend to care about the people by using their skills attained over the years to hype their experience as a benefit to the people and the country. They are selfish but give the impression that they care about the people are trying to help them. They are as useless as a glass hammer.
The fourth type of politician, who actually wants to do well for the country, but lacks leadership aptitude, is incompetent. They are likely to do more harm than good because they tend to use old strategies to solve current issues. They are likely to ignore advice from professionals and experts as it is the case of many in the current administration. It might seem strange, but this type of politician believes that he/she has all the solutions to all the problems facing the country. They believe that the country needs them.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, Guyana needs a government that is capable of putting the economy on proper footing and getting rid of all the lawlessness and indiscipline in society.
Accept nothing less than patriotic politicians who are willing to work hard and provide a better life for all.
