(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh in Guyana these days, if rain fall too hard — blame Exxon. If sun hot blame Exxon. If yuh curry get too much salt — somewhere, somehow, Exxon got fuh be in de pot.
Now leh nobody mistake de matter. Dem boys know fully well that when it come to de oil contract, plenty people feel we get de short end of de pipeline. Is a deal that does make some people scratch dem head till bald patch start show. So when citizens grumble ‘bout Exxon, dem got reason fuh ask hard questions.
But fairness is fairness, and confusion is confusion.
This week, when long snake-like lines start curling round we petrol stations, people quick fuh point finger and holler, “Look Exxon at wuk again!” One man claim how Exxon playing games with we head.
Hold on de brakes.
Yes, nuff of de stations got Mobil sign bright and shiny. Yes, Mobil is a brand tied to ExxonMobil worldwide. But that ain’t mean ExxonMobil executives sitting in Texas deciding who in Georgetown getting $5,000 gas and who got fuh push deh car home.
Dem boys seh branding and ownership is two different things. Is like wearing Manchester United jersey ain’t make yuh de striker. A company can license a brand name and get others to distribute and operate then petrol stations in the Caribbean.
In this case, de same outfit that used to move certain products of another brand now distributing under de Mobil banner. So de sign say Mobil, but de management, logistics and day-to-day operations ain’t Exxon headquarters business.
So while people cussing Exxon fuh de shortage, dem boys seh wrong target getting lash. If supply chain stumble, if tanker late, if inventory planning flop, or if demand suddenly spike because everybody panic-buying like apocalypse coming Friday — that ain’t de oil giant directly causing de line.
Now don’t get dem boys wrong. Exxon got enough issues on de national scoreboard already. Nobody need to invent fresh charges.
So next time confusion start, separate de contract grievance from de gas pump grievance.
Because if we gon blame people properly, at least leh we blame de right people.
Talk half. Leff half.
