(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh is one lil gas hiccup and suddenly the whole country behave like is doomsday dress rehearsal. One day—just one day—gas get lil snag, and Guyanese turn to panic buying.
Yuh woulda think is the last drop of petrol on Earth. Lines stretch longer than payday at pay office, and tempers get hotter than sun in August sun. But the real comedy? People turn up with every container known to mankind. Dem boys seh they see man with bucket, water bottle, old paint tin, one fella even try he luck with a plastic bag.
Now nobody ain’t got problem if you buying lil extra—just in case. But some people behaving like they planning to open their own gas station next week.
And while everybody scrambling, nobody stop to think: the more you hoard, the less for everybody else. Is simple math, but apparently panic does cancel common sense quicker than rain cancel cricket. The real joke is how the panic itself make things worse. Lines moving slower, people cussing, horn blowing, and pump attendant looking like they need counselling. All because folks decide to top up everything from car to cutlass.
Now dem boys seh the situation done stabilize since yesterday. Tankers roll in, pumps flowing, and things getting back to normal. But you think that stop the panic buyers? No! Some still out deh like they buying enough gas to see them through the rest of the year. One man get so catch up in the frenzy, he empty out he whole wallet filling gas. When he done, tank full, containers full, pride full—but pocket empty. Man reach home and had to explain to he family that dinner is now “premium unleaded imagination,” because he ain’t even had money left fuh buy a loaf of bread.
Another man tell dem boys, “I just topping up fuh safety.” Safety? At this rate, you safer opening a petrol station in yuh backyard.
Dem boys seh Guyanese got plenty good qualities—but when it come to panic, we does go all out. Next time, leh we try a new strategy: calm down, tek a breath, and remember—yuh cyah drive two car at the same time.
Unless, of course, panic reach that stage too.
Talk half. Leff half.
