The Giftland Shopping Mall, Liliendaal ECD, will be transformed into a hive blazing
fist tonight when several top local boxers square off for honours in the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) slugfest dubbed ‘Locked and Loaded‘ and fans are assured of an action packed, fun-filled night of fistic fury.
For the first time in local boxing history boxing buffs will be able to enjoy true fistic fury as several top MMA fighters will also take to the ‘square jungle’ to show off their wares. Trinidadian, Martin Joseph will match skills with Emerson Hurley (BDS) in the light/heavyweight division and both fighters enter the ring with quite a reputation. Joseph operates out of the Real Sport Fight Club in Trinidad and Tobago and has compiled a decent domestic Championships Record. He is also the National Sambo Champion, a title he has successfully defended since 2012. A compact fighter of impressive physique, Joseph was also the 2010 National Kickboxing Champion and the 2012 National Grappling Champion. He is currently ranked 8th at SAMBO Casablanca African World Championship.
Guyanese are urged to come out with miniature flags in support of their countryman, Lawrence Hearwood, who tackles Keron Bourne in a light/heavyweight matchup. Those are the two professional MMA Bouts that will be supported by 5 amateur encounters including the light/heavyweight bout between Lashawn Sladden (TRI) and Kwanza Thompson (GUY), the lightweight shindig between Erland Maloney (TRI) and Isiah Cave (GUY). The other fights in this category are the lightweight bout between Ahmad Khan (TRI) and Kereem Simon (GUY), the heavyweight match between two Guyanese, Colwyn Benn and Ryan Beaton and the flyweight encounter between Gershom Griffith (TRI) and Ray Gill (GUY).
Then there is the boxing aspect of the card which features several local pugilists matching gloves against each other and will be highlighted with a potentially thrilling 10 rounder where former CABOFE bantamweight champion, Dexter ‘The Kid’ Marques pits his skills against Venezuelan, Luis Alberto Requena in a 10 rounds flyweight scrap. Requena is no slouch and will be quite aware that his opponent might be a mite ring rusty. However, Marques has shrugged aside claims of ring rust saying that he is in kittle shape and ready for all comers. A keen battle for top accolades is anticipated.
Then there is the catchweight 4 rounder between Anson Green and Charwin Estwick and those fans that witnessed the latter fighter in action will know that Greene will have to be at his best to overcome him. Estwick attacks all night and Green, with a similar disposition, will not want to change his tactics. One could only visualize the concomitant outcome as these two go after each other.
Imran Khan and Keeve Allicock will duke it out in a 6 rounds lightweight match and both fighters have been spewing venom and issuing overt threats. Should this attitude wend its way into the ring one could imagine the ensuing war.
The main supporting bout will be a super/middleweight 6 rounds encounter between Edmond Declou and Winston Pompey. Those boxers have fought twice with DeClou being victorious in one while the other ended in a stalemate. Pompey has since journeyed to France where he had enjoyed immense success while Declou had taken a sabbatical. Both are saying that their respective activities will stand them in good stead for tonight’s encounter. Only time will tell!
More punches will be thrown when the 2 WBC amateur bouts between bantamweights, Rewinne David, and Akeela Malazon and jnr/welterweights Kelon Isaacs and Euel Augustin get underway. The first is a 4 rounder while the second is over 3 rounds.
The betting boys are poised and ready to cast their wagers. Irrespective of who carts off the spoils among them, even the losers will feel satisfied of their money’s worth. Admission $1000 for outer ringside, $2000 for ringside, while those occupying the VIP section will be required to pay $5000. Bell time is 20:00hrs.
