Minister Henry (centre) engages Anthony Drayton (2nd R) and James Bond (extreme R) in
discussion in the presence of Frankie Farley (extreme L) and Attorney-at-Law, Yolander Persaud.
The recently installed executive body of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) continues to work assiduously towards the development of the sport and is putting the modalities in place to integrate chess in schools and to establish for the first time in Guyana a Chess and Scholastic Centre.
This much was relayed to the Junior Minister of Sports within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry, when several members of the GCF executive joined their President, James Bond, for a courtesy call to her Main Street office on Tuesday afternoon. Other (GCF) executives present at the forum were Vice President of Development, Frankie Farley, Attorney-at-Law, Yolander Persaud in her capacity of Vice President of Sponsorship and Finance and Committee Member Anthony Drayton.
Mr. Bond briefed the Minister of plans to integrate chess in schools. He also disclosed that plans are in train to establish an inaugural institution to be known as The Guyana Chess and Scholastic Centre which will serve to augment the schools’ programme. This entity would be christened in honour of Guyana’s most prolific player, former national and Caribbean champion, Maurice Broomes.
Minister Henry was also informed of plans to focus on increasing female participation. Mr. Bond said that his team will place greater emphasis on organising more women’s tournaments in an effort to pique the interest of the distaff groups in all ten regions.
Minister Henry was enthused by those projections and pledged her unstinted support. She was also impressed by the GCF executives’ desire to establish a permanent home for the sport and committed to full support. Plans are also in train to facilitate other board games such as scrabble among others.
Minister Henry further indicated that her Ministry is in the process of building capacity amongst her staff to better manage aforementioned facilities in order to guarantee optimum involvement and deliverables in and from the use of such facilities. She also pledged full support to the work of the Federation and indicated that her Ministry has an open door policy for the GCF and all other sport disciplines.
