Up and coming national cyclist, Romello Crawford of Berbice, who has been in terrific form so far this year, will be leaving the country today to continue his training in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Crawford, who hails from Fyrish on the Corentyne Berbice, is the national junior champion for 2016. He is a member of the Trojan Cycle Club of Berbice and the PSL Cycling Club of Trinidad. Crawford, who usually campaigns in Trinidad and Tobago, Anguilla, Aruba and other parts of the Caribbean, will be leaving to continue his training in order to participate in the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation Easter Grand Prix Cycle Race meet. The cycling action is set for April 14, 15 and 17.
Despite his many sacrifices and achievements so far Crawford has had a rough time with the national association.
In 2014 and 1015 despite being one of the top juniors in the country, he was overlooked for national participation in the Caribbean Junior Cycling Championships (CJCC) in Dominican Republic in 2015.
That year four cyclists were selected Romello Crawford and Andrew Hicks of Berbice and Jamal John and Raphael Leung of Demerara. Crawford was training in Anguilla and Aruba and in the end the two Berbicians were dumped from the team and the two other cyclists made the trip. This was despite the Berbice cyclist securing their own sponsorship for the trip.
In 2014, Crawford who was the top junior cyclist in the country at the time had journeyed to Trinidad to prepare for the championship. He was in prime condition and doing well when he received word that he was not selected on the Guyana Team. The GCF excuse then was that they taught he had migrated to Trinidad. This was despite Crawford still attending school in Guyana.
Not undaunted, Romello Crawford continued to perform and won many races both at the senior and junior levels in Guyana.
Romello has again ventured out on his own in his quest to improve himself. (Samuel Whyte)
