BCB Inter Zone U-17 cricket competition… Wins for New Amsterdam Canje and West Berbice

New Amsterdam Canje and West Berbice score victories when play began in the Berbice Cricket Board U-17 Inter Zone cricket competition being held in the Ancient County.
In the two matches that were played last Sunday- New Amsterdam/Canje defeated the much fancied Lower Corentyne by 26 runs, while West Berbice hammered Upper Corentyne by 217 runs.
In a game played at the Port Mourant Cricket Club ground New Amsterdam Canje won the toss and elected to take first strike. They found the going tough as they lost their first wicket without a run on the board. They then reached 35 before they lost their second wicket. However, they were bowled out for a disappointing 91 in 29 overs.
Garfield Benjamin top scored with 27 (2×4), while Richardo Ramdial made 16 and Jevon Schultz 10. Bowling for Lower Corentyne, pacer Nathaniel Raghu was the main destroyer with 6 for 23 from seven overs. There was one wicket a piece for Joshua Wilson, Kelvin Omrao, Dorasami Mahadeo and Junior Sinclair.
In reply the much herald Lower Corentyne line up flattered to deceive and were bundled out for an embarrassing 65, despite extras being a whopping 30. None of the batsmen reached double figures in a poor batting display.
Bowling for New Amsterdam Canje – Melvin Singh with 4 for 4 off six overs and Nikeem Noble with 4 for 16 from 8.3 overs were the main destroyers as Jevon Schultz supported with 2-7.
In the second game played at the Bush Lot Cricket Club Ground, West Berbice; The home team led by a swashbuckling 127 by Seon Glasgow blazed to an imposing 396 for five in their 50 overs as they tore the hapless Upper Corentyne bowling apart. Glasgow was in control from the start as he got off the mark with a boundary the first ball he faced as he went on to clubber 9×6 and 10×4. Supporting Glasgow in their run feast were Wazin Inshan 65, Deonauth Persaud 56(1×6, 8×4), Faraz Gafoor 47 (6×4) and Windel Fordyce 31(4×4).
Bowling for the Upper Corentyne, Khemraj Dhoop took two wickets, while there was each for Vinard Kumar, Kevin Latiff and Mahndra Nandu.
In their reply, faced with the daunting total before them, the Upper Corentyne lads were bowled out for 179 with Brandon Mangal 69 (9×4), Nandu 19 and Kevin Hooper 15 were the other batsmen to reach double figure. There were 44 extras in the innings.
Bowling for West Berbice, Glasgow returned with the ball to snare 3 wickets, while Navendra Prashad also captured 3 with Nigel Deodat 2 and Chris Harry 1. The competition is expected to continue tomorrow.
