Myran Maraj, a businessman, was yesterday released on $100,000 bail after being slapped
with three counts of fraudulent conversion.
Maraj, 28, of Lot 145 D’Abreu Street, Newton, pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on August 15, 2016 being solely entrusted by Rorry Forde with $130,000, to spray a super bike, Maraj fraudulently converted the money to his own use and benefit.
It is further alleged that between February 2 and February 15 at Georgetown, being solely entrusted by Forde with $207,000, to purchase biker gloves, boots and jackets, he fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit. It is also alleged that on February 6 at Georgetown, being solely entrusted by Forde with $7.8M to purchase a Toyota Tacoma, he fraudulently converted the money to his own use and benefit.
Attorney Everston Lammy-Singh told the court that his client operates an auto body shop.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones said that the parties have known each other for close to 15 years. Prosecutor Jones stated that the virtual complainant gave the money to the defendant to purchase the items, but he never did. Jones revealed that several calls were made to the defendant’s phone by Forde which went unanswered.
According to Jones, the virtual complainant reported the matter and the defendant was arrested and charged. In addition to bail, Maraj was also ordered to lodge his passport.
He will make another court appearance on March 15 for reports and statements.
