Three persons were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, for simple larceny and trafficking in narcotics.
Monica Braithwaite, 28, of Arakaka, North West District; and Rolex Williams, 18, of Eteringbang; pleaded not guilty to separate charges of simple larceny.
It is alleged that on January 28, last, at Arakaka, North West District, Braithwaite, a mother of two, stole $200,000 cash and a silver chain from Vincent Mc Intyre.
In her address to the court, the defendant denied stealing the articles from the man.
Meanwhile, the charge against Williams alleged that on January 25, at Eteringbang, he stole from the person of Trevor Joseph, one pouch, a quantity of Digicel phone cards and $80,000 in cash.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that Joseph had taken Williams for lunch on the day in question, when he snatched the pouch containing the articles mentioned in the charge and made good his escape.
The prosecutor related that Williams was later apprehended by police and charged.
According to Jones, Williams has a pending matter of a similar nature at the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court. Jones said that the defendant is still being investigated in relation to similar matters. Braithwaite was granted $10,000 bail and will return to court on February 7, at the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court. However, Williams was remanded to prison until February 3.
In another matter, 23-year-old Winnick Reid was remanded to prison for allegedly trafficking cannabis sativa (marijuana). Reid who resides on the West Bank of Demerara is accused of having 1.4KG of cannabis sativa in his possession for the purpose of trafficking on January 28, at Eteringbang.
He denied the allegation. His lawyer, Stanley Moore, during a petition for bail told the court that his client has no pending or previous matters.
Moore said that Reid is a father of one and is willing to comply with any conditions attached to bail, even if it meant surrendering his passport.
Prosecutor Jones said that an analyst report is still outstanding from the case file.
Reid will make another court appearance on February 7, at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
