Round 2 action commences tonight at GFC
Reigning champion Milerock ensured that teams out of the Mining community of Linden maintained a perfect record in this year’s Limacol Round Robin / Knockout Football Competition after beating Northern Rangers 2-1 in the feature clash on Saturday, at the GFC ground.
On target for the winners were Troy Lewis, who netted in the 10th minute and Akeem Green whose goal came on the stroke of halftime.
Their wins follow that of Eagles, who defeated Uitvlugt on Friday at the National Track & Field Centre at Leonora and now places all the Linden-based teams in a strong position to qualify for the knockout phase which will be played following the completion of the round robin segment.
Lewis gave them the lead when his fiercely struck right footer from a free-kick taken at the top of the box ricocheted off a defender, before beating the goalkeeper to his left.
Milerock bouyed by their early success continued to orchestrate numerous raids and had the Northern Rangers backline scrambling on many occasions to avoid conceding another goal.
However, Green just on the stroke of halftime collected a ball from just outside the penalty area and in one flowing motion delivered a missile that flew past the goalkeeper hit the base of the crossbar, before bouncing over the goal-line.
The second half saw a more purposeful Northern Rangers, but despite some impressive buildups in the mid-field, getting into the Milerock goal area proved to be a difficult task, while the visitors always looked threatening on every offensive excursion.
Devon Johnson, however, was able to penetrate the stubborn Milerock defence and scored a beauty when he bent a free-kick from about 22 yards out past the flailing attempt of the goalkeeper one minute into extra time.
It was more of a consolation strike because the final whistle sounded shortly after. Earlier, Winners Connection cruised past Grove Hi Tec by a 3-1 margin with Garey Thompson, Sedrick Hunte and Rawle Gittens netting in the 13th, 32nd and 69th minute respectively.
For Grove Hi Tech, the talented Kevin Padmore found the target in the 78th minute.
The competition resumes today with another double header, at the same venue.
In the opening fixture at 18:30hrs, Winners Connection will be in action against Northern Rangers, while the feature game pits Guyana Police Force (GPF) against Camptown at 20:30hrs.
The winner of each group will be awarded $100,000, while the respective finishers will pocket $50,000, $30,000 and $20,000 apiece.
The overall winner of the event will take home $500,000 and a trophy, while second, third and fourth placed teams collect $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
Banks DIH Limited under the GT Beer Brand, Trophy Stall and Star Party Rentals are also on board.
