In Guyana, the Caribbean and other Third World countries, homosexuals not only face ridicule, they are confronted with the threat of violence. Some are even being killed because of their chosen lifestyle. Everyone has a choice in society but those who chose the gay lifestyle are condemned.
The tolerance level for homosexuals in Guyana is very low and it should be, because the vast majority believe that if homosexuality is allowed to flourish, it will destroy the values and morals of society.
For decades, homosexuals and their supporters had fought for the right to marry legally which they claimed is their fundamental right. However, in Guyana such rights do not exist. Many in Guyana view the United States as a country with high morals and a decorum of decency but they were dumbfounded by the decision of the United States Supreme Court to recognize gay marriages as being legal.
The Court’s decision, however was based strictly on the fundamental rights of individuals to live a lifestyle of their choice. Nonetheless, there will be an uproar in Guyana if any of the courts make such a ruling because most Guyanese believe that homosexuals are a disgrace to society and that marriage should be between a man and a woman.
In Guyana, there has been strong opposition to the gay and lesbian lifestyles from society, churches and several groups whose beliefs have been grounded in the biblical doctrine that homosexuality is an abomination and is something against nature (Leviticus 18: 22 and 20: 13). Christians in general believe that the Bible ordained marriage to be between a man and a woman as was the case with Adam and Eve. They claimed that the Bible did not decree marriage to be between two men or two women.
Christians also claimed that there is no great fulfilment in homosexuality as homosexuals would have them believe and that their fight for acceptance in society was to fill the void; but having gained acceptance there is nothing to enjoy.
However, it is the belief of many that the United States Supreme Court ruling that granted homosexuals the right to marriage could condition the minds of people to believe that they should accept the gay lifestyle.
Studies have shown that countries opposed to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender lifestyle (LGBT) are due to the failure of society to socialize citizens into believing that the government has no right in the bedrooms of individuals. Societies have also not been able to convince their citizens that everyone has a right to the lifestyle he or she chooses as long as the individual does not violate the laws of their respective countries.
Homosexuals and their supporters have insisted that their lifestyle is as morally right as hetero-sexuality, and the problem has been people’s prejudice but with time nations will come around and accept it. They claimed that it is primitive religious bigotry for anyone to oppose their lifestyle even afterit is being recognize in the United States, Canada and several other countries.
However, those opposed to the homosexual lifestyle believe that the US Supreme Court ruling was wrong and it will have major consequences for societies in the US and elsewhere.
It is estimated that over fifteen percent of the US population are homosexuals and there are approximately 400 million people worldwide. Several religious studies, even though considered bias by some, have revealed that homosexuals tend to suffer from physical maladies and psychological pain and more than 50 percent have experienced some form of depression.
These mental issues have naturally resulted in unstable relationships among gays and are due to the high level of societal intolerance, hatred and prejudice against them. Many homosexuals have engaged in substance abuse and some have committed suicide in order to end their pain and suffering. Because of the stigmatization by society, few have sought counseling or therapy. It is acceptable for those opposed to homosexual lifestyles to speak their minds but without retribution because a wrong can never be right.
