Two men, one of whom is a juvenile, were remanded to prison for allegedly robbing several persons of cash and other items while using a pellet gun, last week Monday at North Road, Georgetown.
Ivor Billingy, a mason and father of one, of Lot 67 Uitvlugt, Pasture, West Coast Demerara and a 16-year-old boy were jointly charged with robbery under-arms.
It is alleged that on January 10, at North Road, Georgetown, while armed with a gun, they robbed Devika Seenarine of a cell phone, $240,000 cash, an apron, and other items.
It is also alleged that on the same day at North Road, Georgetown, they robbed Pedro Lewis of a gold and diamond ring, $100,000 in cash, a Samsung Galaxy S6 and other items. The duo is also accused of robbing Dalmattie Rajram of $11, 000 cash on the same day, while they were in the company of another and armed with a gun.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges after they were read to them by Magistrate Annette Singh, yesterday, in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It was reported that swift action by Presidential guards and police led to the arrest of the men just after they robbed one of the virtual complainants at a fruit stall at Albert Street and North Road.
Calvin Brutus, Deputy Police Commander, had told Kaieteur News that a customer was at the fruit stall making a purchase when two men on a black CG motorcycle accosted him with a firearm and relieved him of cash.
One of the alleged bandits was apprehended by presidential guards who were passing and observed him acting in a suspicious manner. The other one managed to run through an alleyway while still armed. Cops later learnt that he was carrying a pellet gun.
Billingy was charged separately with another count of robbery under-arms.
It is alleged that on September 2, 2016 at Robb and Water Streets, while in the company of another and armed with a gun Billingy robbed Loris James of $13,000 cash, a MAC make up set among other items to the total of $192,000. He pleaded not guilty.
They were both represented by Attorney Clyde Forde, who petitioned for them to be released on reasonable bail. Forde told the court that the defendants are not flight risk and are willing to comply with any condition attached to bail. He added that none of them have passports.
While the 16-year-old has no antecedents, the lawyer told the court that Billingy was charged before with simple larceny.
However, Police Prosecutor Gillian Simmons opposed bail for the defendants citing the fact that a gun was used during the commissioning of the offences. The prosecutor also pointed out the seriousness and penalty attached to the offences.
They will make another court appearance on January 30.
