In two days time, a new executive will be installed in the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and many genuinely interested in seeing the advancement of sport will be hoping that the iron-fisted rule that characterised the Establishment comes to a screeching halt.
One just has to read a letter penned by Attorney-at-Law Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon to understand the nature of behaviour within the Establishment.
It is a clear illustration of unfair treatment which could be stemming from her justifiable ambition to challenge the status quo or even more alarming could it be a case of chauvinism.
The GOA under current President K.A Juman Yassin’s tenure over the 20-plus years have undoubtedly failed to arouse confidence among major stakeholders and athletes and this kind of uninspiring leadership is amongst the primary reasons for our disappointing performances on the regional and international stages.
How could an entity that is suppose to play an integral role in sports development of a nation be so callous in its operations that it attempts to obstruct a country’s chances of gaining global recognition.
The mere fact that the entity that Persaud-McKinnon heads, request to become a member of the GOA has received the cold shoulder from the GOA speaks volumes about its governance and transparency.
The view of many is that she is a threat to Yassin’s occupancy at the helm of the GOA and apparently is does not sit well with him or his emissaries.
If Guyana is to move forward in sports, misfits such as Yassin and others should not be blessed with such responsibilities and those with the mandate to vote will have to take this into serious consideration during Wednesday’s elections.
There has been an overwhelming expression of grief in this country about our pathetic performances at major events and with the Government’s display of intent via the doubling of monies to be expended in sports, stakeholders with similarly acceptable wisdom, will be required to achieve this overdue goal.
At present, even if there are those with that understanding inside the GOA, their tranquil posture is what is raising questions about their competency.
The concerns of athletes should be the reason for change when the voting begins and not the fear of being shut out should the incumbent retain office.
It is time administrators show some intestinal fortitude and do what is right for their constituents and not a chef-de-mission selection or an isolated instance of financial assistance.
Those considerations should not be used as mitigating factors for Yassin’s return to office.
On the contrary, Yassin’s convenient act of goodwill is what he is supposed to do; fearing repercussion only serves to draw attention to the suspicion of reprisal.
The act of vengeance is what many administrators use to intimidate voters and those who do not operate in accordance with the status quo, but there are numerous recent examples of what can happen when the majority calls for change.
We’ve read about change, we’ve experienced change so the thrust must be about transforming the GOA landscape.
