Christmas Day is usually spent with loved ones remembering the year behind us and happily looking forward to the New Year.
Besides this, everyone will be looking for some form of entertainment and what better way to do it than by switching on your television to watch the Hidden Treasures Puppet Show.
A crew of puppets will be invading Guyana on Christmas Day for the country’s first ever recorded puppet show aimed at providing entertainment for the entire family.
For almost two years, Esther Sobers has been working on this masterpiece. According to her, the idea was birthed after she observed the limited entertainment shows aired on television on Christmas Day.
“I have been working on this for almost two years. And I didn’t want to procrastinate any longer. So I said Christmas would be a lovely time to air this show.” Sobers continued, “It is something different and something educational and fun. The audience will be fond of it. This show will target Guyanese Christmas and caters for children from as young as two years.”
Sobers has pulled out all the stops to bring the nation together with a sparking line-up of characters in five different plays which will be transmitted on Channels 02,72 and 102.
Sobers said that she hopes the show reminds families about the true meaning of Christmas, which is the reflection of the birth of Jesus Christ.
“I hope families viewing the show will remember that Christmas is not all about the gifts and that they will appreciate and be thankful for whatever they have even if it is just a little.”
The puppeteers have interesting personalities.
‘Ess’ is the host of the show. Her character is being played by Jamella Braithwaite. She is friendly and uses her melodious voice to express her feelings. Ess believes that there are hidden treasures buried in everyone.
Professor Grumps is portrayed by Jermain Grimmond. Professor Grumps is an English lecturer. He does more than stand in front of a classroom talking. He guides students on the structure and content of the English Language, including the meaning and spelling of words, and rules of composition and grammar.
Mark Kazim plays Mr. Lee, who owns a word shop at Kitty Market. “Learn Spanish, Portuguese and French at Cheap, Cheap prices”, a sign on his shop states. Mr. Lee likes to make money and is taking advantage of his trilingual ability. There are several other characters whose role will grab your attention.
