Dear Editor,
I was just perusing some newsprints and stumbled on an article which reads ‘Athletes identified for National Elite Camp’ dated Wed. Dec. 7, 2016 and the first question that came to mind was the following: who is behind this venture?’
As I continue reading, Eddison Jefford, sitting member of the National Sports Commission was the person that identified the athletes for training and development and everything depends if all the logistics are formalised among the main stakeholders. I am not sure if this venture was fully thought out by E. Jefford or whether it was a collective venture of the National Sports Commission members, but in all fairness, everyone behind this venture must be credited and I sincerely wish and hope it is a success for the benefit of all.
I will say publicly from an independent standpoint that one very important factor for the success of such a venture is establishing where the funding is coming from, how much and a full commitment is needed from all stakeholders. I don’t ever wish to read in the press that half way down the line, funds are dried up.
I will say for the record that I found a particular section of the article very humourous and it reads, ‘he (E. Jefford) believes that what is required for the Elite Camp and programme to succeed is a national effort where all differences are cast aside.’
That’s a very challenging task to my mind to be accomplished, but again, I am elated to finally read that E. Jefford is finally seeing things clearly. I also hope that E. Jefford would seriously consider his colleague and friend, sports reporter of KN, Mr. Rawle Welch for a place within the venture because it is my belief that he has a great lot to offer to the sports fraternity of Guyana and he should be utilised for his skills, education and knowledge. His role as a stakeholder is an asset to sports Guyana…
I humbly say to those fortunate athletes selected for the venture to take advantage of this opportunity, be very disciplined, committed etc. because those are very important goals which goes hand in hand with intense training to take on the world on the international circuit.
Yours Faithfully,
T. Pemberton.
