Suriname’s top basketball club De Arend only loss on their 1984 tour of Guyana was to the
Mike Brusche coached Eagles Basketball Club. De Arend defeated Georgetown, Linden and Berbice under-25 teams informs Statistician Charwayne Walker. All matches were contested at the National Sports Hall, Guyana premiere hoop venue.
The Dutchmen started their 1984 tour on a disappointed note losing by two points to Eagles at the National Sports Hall. The star studded Eagles had to pull all stops to squeeze out a 66 to 64 victory. For the victors, Hewley Harry, Caricom All-star Selectee, who was then National Centre and Captain top scored with 16 pts, fellow National Merton Fitzalbert 12 pts, and guest player Leon Christian 13 pts and 11 rebounds. For De Arend, veteran guard Gerald Pang-A-Tjok top scored 13 pts, J. Rysell scored 11 pts.
The tourist rebounded from their opening loss by beating Georgetown under-25 57 to 50 at the National Sports Hall. J. Vry top scored for De Arend with 17 pts, J. Rysell 12 pts and G. Ons 9 pts. For Georgetown under-25, Richard Watson top scored with 15 pts, Leon Christian 10 pts, 10 rebounds, Heinrid David 8 pts, 5 steals and 5 assists.
After humbling Georgetown, De Arend thrashed Berbice under-25 at the National Sports Hall 95 to 68. J. Rysell had a game high 27 pts for De Arend, J. Vry 14 pts, R. Griffith 12 pts, G. Ons 12 pts, R. Lieveld 10 pts. For Berbice under-25, Denville Pieters had a monster game with 26 pts and 10 assist, Cecil Melville 13 pts and 7 assist, E. Henry 11 pts.
The Dutchmen wrapped up their 1984 Guyana’s mission by silencing Linden under-25 67 to 59 at the National Sports Hall in front of 2000 fans. R. Lieveld was De Arend’s leading scorer with 16 pts, J. Vry 14 pts and J. Rysell 12 pts. For Linden under-25 National Player and Caricom All Star Selectee James Brusche top scored with 16 pts, Neil Caines 12 pts and Auric Tappin 11 pts offered support.
