The two children who perished in last Thursday’s boat accident in the Waini River were laid to rest yesterday, even as police try to identify the boat operator who left the scene after ramming the family’s vessel.
A relative said that Lisa Da Silva, 7, and Davenand Da Silva, six, were buried at Mabaruma, North West District.
Their mother, Ophelia James, sustained fractured ribs and a broken shoulder, and reportedly underwent surgery yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Meanwhile, police have released the two boat operators who were being questioned about the accident. A senior official said that investigators are still to identify the culprit.
Police had questioned one of the boatmen after receiving reports that his was the only vessel that had traversed the area on Thursday night when the crash occurred.
Residents also reportedly saw the boatman painting his vessel, which had sustained some damage.
Basil Da Silva, 49, his reputed wife, Ophelia James, 47, their 10-year-old son, Dwayne Da Silva, and Lisa and Davenand, were heading home in their wooden boat at around 21.30 hrs on Thursday last when another vessel, travelling at a fast rate, slammed their boat from behind.
The family was hurled into the river. Both parents and the 10-year-old managed to swim ashore, but the two smaller children could not be found.
Their bodies were recovered on Saturday. Part of the wrecked boat as well as its outboard engine, were found.
