Under-16 boxers will be involved in pitched battles when competition in the Pepsi sponsored Mike Parris tournament continues on Sunday at the National Gymnasium starting at 1:00pm.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Steve Ninvalle, informed that this is the second edition of this tournament for the year, the first being in April when the first Schoolboys and Juniors tournament was held here.
He disclosed that nine gyms will be participating in Sunday’s event with the defending champions being the Essequibo gym, which is under the guidance of Coach Clifton Moore. The nine gyms are expected to furnish about 50 young boxers who will compete in the event.
Ninvalle pointed that the association’s focus will be on youth and this event is part of their programme in this regard. GBA like the rest of the Caribbean has been seeking to better their fortunes on the international stage with Ninvalle, who is a Committee Member of AIBA, the International Boxing body, taking his case to that level for assistance even as the region make their moves.
He stated that another such tournament is slated for December.
