Shop owner charged for trafficking girl, 17

A 28-year-old woman was yesterday released on $230,000 bail after it was alleged she trafficked a teenage girl for sexual exploitation.
The woman, Nafeeza Mohamed, of 17 Bush Lot, Essequibo Coast, denied that between April 26 and May 31, at Big Hope, Backdam, Region One, she recruited, transported and harboured the girl for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
Mohamed was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that the defendant took the virtual complainant (VC) to work at a shop in the interior. He said that when the VC arrived she was forced into prostitution.
Jones had no objections to the defendant being released on bail. However, he asked that bail be granted in a substantial amount.
According to the Prosecutor, the VC is currently in the custody of the Ministry of Social Protection.
This matter has been adjourned until August 3.
