Dexter Gonsalves matches gloves with former champ DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley

Ardent boxing buffs will nostalgically reminisce on that night of October 24 last year when Dexter Gonsalves turned in one of his best performances of his fledgling career to clinch a 10th round technical knockout over Clive ‘The Punisher’ Atwell and cart off the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) lightweight title. Since then, Atwell has developed neurological issues that have required surgical intervention while Gonsalves is yet to return to the ring.
Now, as Atwell prepares to travel overseas for further medical attention, Gonsalves is getting ready to resume his career when he tackles former World Boxing Organization Super Lightweight champion, American, DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley for the Fecarbox lightweight title on August 27 at the Giftland Office Max Mall, Lilliendaal ECD.
Gonsalves will be at the Abdool and Abdool Insurance Brokerage, Avenue of the Republic, to affix his signature to the contract this afternoon. The promoters will also reveal the names of the other boxers to comprise the card but referee, Eion Jardine has assured that those boxers will be carefully selected to ensure an action packed card.
Despite not fighting since the Atwell encounter, Gonsalves had visited the gym at least three times a week to stay in shape and will be expected to intensify activities following the confirmation. He has compiled an 8-1-2 record and five of his bouts were abbreviated giving him a decent 45% knockout ratio. Gonsalves’ international experience is restricted to several fights in Trinidad and Tobago where he has lived for a number of years. It was during his sojourn in that country that he suffered his lone loss to Michel Agard. This was the very fighter with whom he had also fought to a drawn decision. The only other blemish to his record was another drawn decision to Jamaican, Muhammed Dawes in Marabella Trinidad and Tobago in December 2007. He is still riding high following the win over Atwell and relishing a win over Corley which could propel him into the world rankings.
Corley, a veteran with valuable experience has compiled a 47-27-1 record stopping 28 of his opponents for a decent 37% knockout ratio.
He was recently in Jamaica for this year’s edition of the Contender series and won three fights with knockouts against Richard Holmes and Revlon Lake, while scoring a points win over Michael Gardener. Otherwise, he had tangled with such big names as Zab Judah in defence of his World Boxing Organization Super Lightweight which he lost.
Corley has also faced Guyana’s former Olympics representative, Dillon Carew twice winning one fight unanimously while the two fought to a draw in the other encounter. Other big names on Corley’s resume include Darryl Tyson and Floyd Mayweather Jr among others.
The local boxers go into training immediately after the signing ceremony concludes.
