Bullet-riddled bodies at Berbice…Friend who invited men to fish among suspects
A farmer’s employee and a friend of murder victims Pawan Chandradeo, Naresh
Rooplall and Jaikarran Chandradeo, are among three people in custody, as police try to find out who blasted the victims with a shotgun in the Mibicuri backdam last Friday.
According to police sources, two of the detained men are security workers at a camp near a rice farm, located a short distance from the area where the victims had gone fishing.
From information received, police have indicated that the killers and their victims were well acquainted.
“We have some leads that we are following so hopefully we will be able to make some more arrests and give the family some closure,” Divisional Commander, Ian Amsterdam, said yesterday.
“This is a very tragic incident and we are working around the clock to ensure that the family has the justice they deserve.”
However, investigators are still seeking a motive for the brutal execution-style killing.
“The first man (that was detained) would have invited them (to fish), and we have heard that somebody did not want them fishing in the rice field.”
Kaieteur News understands that one of the detained men had initially denied that he had accompanied the victims to fish.
The bodies of 37-year-old Pawan Chandradeo, called ‘Suresh’ of Lot 163 Mibicuri, BBP; 33-year-old Naresh Rooplall called ‘Ticka Bai’ of No. 77 Village, Corentyne and 15-year-old Jaikarran Chandradeo called ‘Kevin’ of Mibicuri North, were found around 09.00 hrs on Friday in a backdam at Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne. The slain teen still had a bag with fish slung around his shoulder.
The corpses bore gaping shotgun wounds to the heads and upper bodies.
Three shotgun cartridges were found near the bodies. Investigators are trying to ascertain whether any of the detained individuals own a shotgun.
According to reports, the victims were found by Sudama Jagmohan, a rice farmer of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder and his workmen.
According to Jagmohan, he was on his way to his rice field at Cookrite area where he also has hassars.
Jaghoman said that on their way to his farm, they group found the bodies lying on a dam in his rice-land.
He immediately called a neighbour who informed the police.
The police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Marlon Taylor and residents, secured boats and journeyed to the area where they eventually came upon the graphic scene.
Shoba Devi Luckicharan, the mother of Naresh Rooplall, told Kaieteur News that her son ventured to the backdam to catch fish.
With him were her son-in-law and two grandsons, Jaikarran and Alvin.
According to reports, 13-year old Alvin Chanderdeo, who accompanied them, was left at a pump station on a dam, as the others went further into the savannahs to fish.
The lad stayed at the pump station from where he reportedly heard gunshots.
The bodies are at Ramoo’s Funeral Home awaiting Post Mortem Examinations.
