What started out as a boat cruise, last Sunday, ended up as a total embarrassment for patrons and the promoters. The M.V.Malali which was transporting hundreds of persons to Bartica, some for the first time, ran aground minutes after taking off from Supenaam, Essequibo Coast.
Compounding the situation even further, angry patrons lamented that they were not offered an apology by the promoters neither were they reimbursed any monies since they never made the intended trip to Bartica as was planned.
Audrey Garraway, who was among hundreds of other Essequibians to venture on the trip to Bartica described the experience as embarrassing.
Garraway explained that they were told that the M.V.Malali would have departed the Good Hope/ Supenaam stelling around 9:00 hours. The boat departed some fifteen minutes later and ran aground just off the Supenaam stelling and stayed there for some four hours.
Garraway said after been stuck in the boat for four hours, the boat moved. Garraway said it was now 1:00 PM but instead of continuing the journey to Bartica, the captain turned the boat around and headed back to Supenaam. Garraway said that is when the commotion started.
She said that patrons started to use expletives and behave disorderly. She and another passenger however took the onus on themselves to venture to the captain and questioned him about the situation. Gateway said they were told by the captain that if they had continued the trip to Bartica, the journey would have lasted until the following day due to the tide which was low at the time.
Garraway said that among the hundreds of Essequibians, people of varying ages and ethnicity were on that trip to Batica.
