Dear Editor;
I refer to Freddie Kissoon’s column; “Guyana: Symphony of cruelty, misery and nihilism, July 5, 2016. This is exactly the problem we face in our dear land of Guyana . We have become a soulless nation. We have descended in to the dark abyss of low or no moral principals. There is no compassion from any corner, from our leaders, social organizations.. It rips one’s heart to see the plight of our citizens, desperately struggling, an uphill struggle, knowing that there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
The RICH BUSINESSMAN mentioned was a “Bed fellow” of the previous regime. Who was so much criticized by the then opposition, now the party in power? Least we forget the coalition went to “bed” with the same RICH BUSINESSMAN soon as they gained power in May 2015…. These businesses are allowed by our politicians to bleed the nation, without giving anything in return…..except into the politicians pockets……Go figure…..
The working class of Guyana is nothing but a stepping stone for the rich to get richer. No regards to health and safety. It was so sad to see that some of the construction workers who were employed to erect the stands at Durban Park working with no safety shoes on their feet. Some were working with “flip-flops” –what we call push toe slippers. There were young men cleaning the drains around the city, working without long boots. Many of them in knee high socks and slippers. They endure this to make the politicians and Guyana look good in the eyes of the world for our Jubilee celebration. A cost that we could ill afford.
As I’ve mentioned many times before, it is not in the interest of the politicians to do for the less unfortunate. Our politicians have failed to comprehend the basic fact that they were ELECTED TO SERVE THE PEOPLE. Guyana’s politicians have the misconceived notion that it is their God given right to act arrogantly as opposed to one of humility. Fill their pockets as opposed the putting systems in place so the people will be the benefactors.
This arrogance has been the reason why our society has been eroding for decades, degenerating into a state of backwardness, with no end in sight. The change of regime has not stopped or even slowed this runaway train. Look at the parking meter fiasco…arrogance, lack of transparency…..
Every day we hear, read or see of the heinous acts perpetrated by many. Children hiring others to harm parents; husbands hacking and maiming their spouses and children. Criminals not only robbing but viciously beating their victims with the cruel intent to inflict bodily harm. I remember as a youngster that GY always had “thief-man.” But in those days, they had pride to perform their criminal acts with such skills that most time we don’t know that we were robbed, until after the fact.
As the saying goes, when the HEAD (the leadership) is incompetent and non-existent, and uncaring, the body (the general population) does whatever it pleases. Anarchy, violence, becomes the norm of the day. When the citizens of a country see that “elected” leaders are corrupt, they take it upon themselves to act in their own way doing the same. When the citizens see the “elected” leaders arbitrarily give themselves a BIG FAT raise, then they are being told (the SMALL MAN) not to expect anything much ( as was stated by a minister) This creates a breakdown in society, as is evident in the high spate of crime in our society. And it was ironic to read the interview a few weeks ago that KN had with the President. When asked about the high level of crime in the country, his (the President) reply was “… what crime” I don’t know what kind of rock the President head is under.
Guyanese are truly descended into a life without objective meaning or purpose.
My heart bleeds for Guyana …
