Probe into Roraima Airways airport incident finds safety breaches

Authorities investigating injuries to an engineer at the Eugene F. Correia International Airport over a week ago have determined that safety standards were breached.
According to a report released by the Ministry of Social Protection, yesterday, it received reports of an accident involving an aircraft at the Ogle airport, on June 20, 2016 with an investigation immediately commissioned.
Investigators found that an engineer sustained burns to the body and a fractured left ankle. He was reportedly working on an aircraft engine and was standing on the wing of the craft.
“The investigations have thus far revealed that while the engineer was working on the aircraft owned by Roriama Airways, a fire of unknown origin engulfed an area on the ground below the same engine which he was working on, forcing him to jump from the wing to the ground.”
The engineer sustained the injuries to his left ankle and body after he jumped.
“The management of the company when questioned about the accident was unable to give an accurate account of what transpired. It was determined that breaches of the known safety standards were in existence for an accident to have occurred,” the Ministry disclosed in the report.
The Ministry said that it intends to address all breaches “with the seriousness they deserve”.
Investigators will be collaborating with the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) and other departments in addressing infractions of the Occupational Safety & Health Legislation and all other labour-related laws.
A copy of the investigation report containing the findings will be forwarded to the management of the Roriama Airways in due course.
