Players from Kwakwani Secondary (white jerseys) and Mackenzie High School fight for possession of the ball during their clash yesterday at Wisburg ground.
Jhvon Archer’s diving header in the 76th minute enabled Kwakwani Secondary to claim their second scalp from Linden in three days as play in this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship continued yesterday, at the Wisburg ground.
Playing in wet conditions against Mackenzie High School, the lads from Kwakwani exhibited eye catching ball skills and even though they were the visiting team they showed more hunger than the hosts and got their reward through a cross from the left flank that saw Archer race past his marker on the back post to head past the opposing goalkeeper.
The game which was slightly hampered by the unfavourable conditions due to rain earlier in the day saw both teams try desperately to put together several passes, but the ball stopped in certain parts making it difficult to create chances of scoring as the half came with no team managing to enter the scoresheet.
In the second period a similar pattern continued, but Kwakwani seemed to have read the conditions better, delivering long balls into MHS penalty area and causing some amount of anxiety.
Deep into the final period, Kwakwani mounted an attack on the left side and a long cross floated beautifully into the penalty area and Archer with space between him and the left back ran on and devilvered a powerful header into the back of the net to evoke wild celebrations among the visitors camp.
They held firm until the final whistle sounded to secure the narrow win, but most importantly send a chilling warning to the Linden-based schools remaining in the championship.
The action resumes today, at the same venue with the defending champion Christianburg / Wismar set to take the field.
