A little over one month has elapsed since the massive fire at Gafoor’s Houston Complex
on May 9, in which six fire fighters were injured as sections of the building collapsed on them during attempts to extinguish the massive blaze.
One fireman had reportedly stopped breathing but was successfully resuscitated via CPR (Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), while all had to be treated for smoke inhalation and lacerations. Another fire fighter sustained a fractured neck.
Injuries varied from persons’ eyes being affected by gas from the building, to cuts from broken glass.
Four other firemen had to be treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital and sent home, while one had to seek treatment at a private city hospital. The fire fighter with the fractured neck was kept at GPHC for observation.
Gafoor’s presented the six firemen with cheques ranging from S75, 000 to $100,000 during a ceremony at the refurbished section of their Houston complex.
Five of the six firemen were present as one was still at home recuperating. The six were Fireman Greene, Fireman Cumberbatch, Fireman Moore, Fireman Haley, Fireman Roydon, and Fireman Patterson.
The cheques were donated in recognition of their bravery beyond the call of duty a spokesperson for Gafoor’s stated.
