Nineteen-year-old Powerlifter Daniel Sooklall has been selected to represent Guyana in this year’s ninth
Caribbean Powerlifting Championships from August 14-19 in the United States Virgin Island of St Croix and the teenager, who campaigns in the 59kg weight class, is confident of doing well in his first overseas tournament once he secures sponsorship to make the trip.
Sooklall explained that although he has already been selected to represent Guyana if he does not get enough sponsorship he would not be able to go. Getting sponsorship to make the trip to St Croix could be the biggest weight on his shoulder.
“Unlike sports like cricket and Football where the players airfare, meals and in the case of cricket given retainer contracts and match fees, we have to find sponsors even though we have been picked to represent our country. I believe the Government has provided $1 Million for the entire team,” Sooklall disclosed.
“I have been to a few places with the sponsorship request letter from the Powerlifting Federation and I am hoping that all goes well,” said Sooklall, who has represented Guyana on five previous occasions.
A member of the Fitness Revolution Gym in the East Coast Village of Mon Repos, Sooklall is the National Powerlifting Champion in his weight Class and trains mainly in the evenings alternating, weights training, Cross fit exercises and running for stamina.
He is also employed as a fitness Instructor at Fitness Revolution and disclosed that he has been involved in competitive Powerlifting for the last four years.
“Since I was little I loved being involved in fitness. My two sisters and brother are all involved in Bodybuilding, my older brother and my little sister wants to get involved in the sport in a serious way,” Sooklall revealed.
His mother said since her son was five or six he loved to lift heavy things like old iron and old car wheels. “It’s not surprising that he got into this sport and I am very proud he has been picked to represent Guyana,” his mother added.
The Guyana Amateur Powerlifing Federation has accepted an invitation from the International Powerlifting Federation in conjunction with the North American Powerlifting Federation in this year’s Caribbean Champions in which this Country has won the Best Team title twice before.
Those Companies and individuals desirous of offering sponsorship to Sooklall can contact him on telephone number 657-1627 or the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation.
