The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) will be hosting an International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Umpires, Referees and Tournament Coordinators Course, which begins at 9:00am tomorrow at the National Gymnasium.
ITTF expert, Costa Rican, Silvia Garro will conduct the course, which is scheduled to conclude on May 9. According to a GTTA Press Release, Garro is a well accredited expert, having served as the deputy at the 2013 World Table Tennis Championships.
Garro managed over 80 Umpires at the World Championships; she also served as Chief Referee at the recently completed ITTF Junior Circuit Finals in Guatemala, and has conducted several of the similar courses in many countries.
“She is the first ever official from Costa Rica to receive the distinction and is one of two women in the team, who officiated as referee, a first for a World Championships. The other is China’s Zhang Yingqu,” the GTTA press release informed.
“The programme forms a critical component to the development of the game in Guyana and an area we have been truly lacking and has a deficit,” the association continued.
The plan with the hosting of this programme is to achieve the following: build capacity, develop a nucleus of persons with the understanding of the rules and an ability to coordinate competition, improve the quality of officiating and better coordinate tournaments with the central aim of raising the level and marketing the sport.
According to GTTA, the plan after Garro leaves Guyana is to develop master trainers, who would train more persons to officiate and be paid through our tournament system based on a model the executive committee has developed.
“The Umpires, Referees and Tournament Coordinators Course offers tremendous opportunities for participants since it provides opportunities to accredited persons to be able to travel to other continental tournaments around the world to officiate,” the release noted.
The GTTA has extended invitations to representatives from Region Two, Six and 10; schools in the GTU Districts, Coaches and Clubs among other stakeholders. The GTTA sees this as a step towards advancing the knowledge of Coaches.
By extension, the association wants to raise the level of the players and create the catalyst for improving its institutional structures.
