Dear Editor,
I read, with disgust, the article on Minister Trotman’s press conference on BaiShanLin. Guyanese know when we are being duped and no amount of rhetoric can change that.
Before I lend my analysis of the BaiShanLin saga let me dwell a little on Minister Trotman’s remarks. He stated that he is leaving the decision making process to the Finance Minister since it was the former Finance Minister, Ashni Singh, who had signed the agreement with BaiShanLin. As far as I know Guyana’s forests are part of the country’s natural resources and the last I read this is squarely the portfolio of Mr. Trotman. Kicking the can down the road would not solve the problem.
The Chinese are engaging in a classic case of bait and switch. They are dangling another carrot in front of us by saying another company has or is acquiring BaiShanLIn. Do they think that we are that naive not to see through their trickery. Our resources should be well guarded not dispensed of with such flippancy. Guyanese companies or individuals should be given the opportunity to exploit our resources; after all the international market for our forest products are limitless.
Over the past few years I have read a lot about BaiShanLin but never have I seen any article about any damage to our forests by this entity. Do we know what state they leave the forest in after harvesting? Have they engaged in reforestation? Who is policing them for I suspect that they have been given a free rein to do as they please? Perhaps others can enlighten us on these queries. Ali Hussain
