Relatives stated that doctors at the GPHC worked tirelessly on Omesh Seelall, called Rovin, 21, a labourer of Betsy Ground Village, East Canje Berbice. The man was also hooked up to a machine. However, despite their best efforts the man succumbed to his injuries around 13:30 hrs, yesterday.
According to the man’s father, Seelall, called “Jackpaul”, the doctors had told him that there was little chance that his son would have made it since his brain has stopped functioning.
The distraught man stated that after he visited his eldest son he realised that the machine was keeping him alive. He said, “His head was bash in and his eyes bulged out. There was massive internal damage and bleeding. A lot of clots were removed.”
The man said that after his son was hit the devastating blow to his head and fell unconscious he was pounced upon by the others who stomped him even as he lay gravely ill on the ground bleeding from his mouth, nose, ear, eye and other parts of his body.
His attackers, including two brothers, who all hail from the same village, then fled the scene and went into hiding.
The police acting on information held three men; one was released after being questioned. The other two were subsequently released on bail on Friday, but were rearrested after it was learnt that Seelall had died.
The cops have since intensified the hunt for the main suspect who, is one of the brothers and allegedly delivered the blow.
Reports are that a wedding was being held nearby and hundreds of persons were in the vicinity. Seelall was initially in a nearby shop with some friends, who were imbibing, subsequently left the shop and went outside.
Resident said that there were a number of fights in the vicinity during the night. Seelall was standing on the road in the vicinity of a dray cart when he was attacked around midnight.
The main attacker suddenly ran across the road and grabbed a piece of wood (2×4 scantling) from the dray cart and struck Seelall to his head flooring him instantly and rendering him unconscious.
The others then pounced upon him and stomped him repeatedly before escaping.
Seelall received emergency treatment at the New Amsterdam Hospital before he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Reports are that he suffered a fractured skull and his face was swollen.
The victim was due to leave the county in a month’s time to join his mother and other relatives.
