The annual Trinidad and Guyana Sports Club and Outreach Programme (TGSCOP) U13 Inter Secondary School football competition for schools in the NA/ Canje District began on Monday with two games and continues during the week. The tournament, which is being held at the All Saints Scott Church ground in New Amsterdam, is being played in collaboration with the Hearts of Oak Masters Football club.
In the first game on Monday Vryman’s Erven Secondary defeated New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary by 2-0 margin with Virendra Deoham and Tyrick Ogleton scoring.
In another game Canje Secondary School (CSS) and Tutorial Academy Secondary School played to a 1-1 draw. Scoring for CSS was Timothy Jones, while TASS got their goal off the boot of Shawn Welcome.
Two games were also played on Tuesday with New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS) and Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) playing to a 0-0 draw. The second game between CSS and Berbice High School (BHS) also ended in a 0-0 draw.
Eight schools were invited to take part in the tournament, however only the above mentioned six are participating. The games are 60 minutes affairs.
The top school in the competition will be presented with the Trinidad and Guyana (T&G) Sports Club and Outreach Programme trophy and 15 gold medals, while the runner up will collect a trophy and 15 silver medals. Trophies and other incentives will also be given to the other participating teams. A number of individual prizes will also be presented including the most valuable player, best striker, best defender, best midfielder, best goalkeeper, most promising player(s), and most goal scorer. Players will also be presented with jerseys, trunks, shin pads, hoses, boots and footballs among other things.
The competition is sponsored by Isaac Daniel a resident of Trinidad and a regular visitor to Guyana who started to organized the activities over a decade ago.
The tournament is being coordinated by former national players Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey and Kenrick Bowry.
Yesterday’s games were expected to feature BEI against VESS and BHS taking on TASS. (Samuel Whyte)
