National Park, is feared drowned after the vessel he was in capsized in the Amatuk Falls, Potaro River.
Up to press time, the police were still looking for the body of 22-year-old Akeem Hyles, a member of the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) of New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The police in a press release said that Special Constable 14536 Hyles was in a boat with Joint Services personnel and officials of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) when the vessel capsized.
The mishap reportedly occurred when the boat struck a rock.
There are reports that the other occupants managed to turn the boat upright and then continued their journey after failing to locate Hyles.
Commander of ‘F’ Division, Ravindradat Budhram, said that based on the information he received, the boat hit a rock and went down. He said that one rank could not be accounted for.
He could not say how many persons were in the vessel. Ranks were sent to the area to join the search party.
Meanwhile, a statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources stated that the Government of Guyana commenced an operation with support from the Joint Services to halt illegal mining that has been on the increase in and around the Kaieteur National Park.
The release further stated that a member of the operation went missing.
“Minister Raphael Trotman is saddened by this unfortunate incident and his prayers are with the relatives of the missing rank. The investigation is currently being done, and the public will be kept informed as more information is available,” the released added.
