Former General Secretary of the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA),
Deion Nurse, failed in his bid to secure a place on the executive committee of the Pan American Weightlifting Federation (PAWF) after the Spanish countries stuck together in solidarity of their colleagues.
Mr. Nurse had left Guyana just under a week ago, accompanied by his successor Seon Erskine, to attend the PAWF electoral congress in the Dominican Republic from February 25. He was nominated by the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) and had nurtured ambitions of clinching a spot on the executive committee of that august body.
Mr. Nurse said that his chances of clinching the coveted spot dwindled after the associate members of the Spanish speaking countries rallied behind their colleagues and eventually secured the position.
Mr. W. Ozuna has since retained the Presidency while those individuals that clinched those 3 vacant spots on the executive committee are Fernando Esquirl (Crc), Miguel Nino (Nicaragua) and Luis Zambrano (Euc). Mr. Nurse also informed that the position of General Secretary, left vacant following the death of Eddi Suarez, was filled by Cuban, Rafael Pacheco.
The positions on the Technical Committee were filled by Gustavo Malgor (Argentina), Maritza Ortiz (Dominica), Hugo Themen (Aruba), Carlos Cuervo (Cuba) and David Montero (Brazil).
The three members Medical Committee comprise Rafael Romeo (Esa), Roxana Vargas (Dom) and Mark Lavallec (USA).
Meanwhile, Mr. Nurse, the first Guyanese to be contesting for an executive post since the sport became a member of the World Federation in 1940, said that the forum was beneficial and he was able to garner much needed knowledge. He said that though a mite disappointed that he was unable to clinch the position on the executive committee, he could not help but notice the support rendered by the Spaniards to their representatives which in the end resulted in the success of those aspirants.
The former (GAWA) Secretary posits that Guyana will not be able to secure such influential positions unless the many (local) stakeholders render the requisite support to their representatives.
Nevertheless, he was grateful to those individuals and organizations that contributed to his expenditure to facilitate the trip. Subsequently, he thanked the CEO of the P and P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Ltd, Bishwa Panday, Chris Correia of Trans Guyana Airways, Morse Archer of Cevon’s Waste Management, Raj Singh of Raj Singh Insurance Brokers & Risk Management Consultants Inc and the management of John Fernandes Ltd. He also extended gratitude to officials of the National Sports Commission for their support.
