Raynauth ‘Obeah Man’ Jeffrey continued his ascendancy in local cycling yesterday when he rode away with yet another Digicel Cancer Awareness Road Race title after winning the annual feature overall on Carifesta Avenue outside the National Park.
Jeffrey combined for a time of 3:15:32 in two stages to cash in on the $250,000 first place purse.
The dominant Team Coco cyclist outdid Jaime Ramirez (3:16:01) and Marlon Williams (3:16:23), who finished among the top three in the race.
Linden’s very own, Orville Hinds was good enough for fourth place in 3:16:32, despite winning the second stage from Abary, East Coast Demerara to National Park. The ‘Obeah Man’ had won the first stage from Schoonard to Bushy Park, Parika (return).
Marloe Rodman (3:16:48) was fifth while Andrew Simon and Geron Williams (3:16:49) tied for sixth. Both stages featured 40 miles and Jeffrey won his second title in four editions of the race at the National Park yesterday.
Only second stage winner, Hinds overall victory last year prevented Jeffrey from a three-peat this year in the annual event. Jeffrey’s win streak includes an Ounce of Gold victory since he returned to the local circuit. His next challenge is this week’s Tour of Guyana.
Following the race, representatives of Digicel made a lucrative donation to the Cancer Society as the cyclists’ registration fees were also donated to the Society. Digicel Guyana Inc. handed out in excess of $1.3M in cash and prizes yesterday.
Meanwhile, in the junior category, Jamal John was declared winner ahead of Raphael Leung and Chris Griffith. Hazina Barrett won the female title ahead of Marcia Dick, while Junior Niles rode away with the Veterans’ accolade ahead of Ralph Williams.
