Host Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) defeated Transport Sports Club (TSC) by five wickets to capture the Garvin Nedd youth cricket title on Sunday night.
TSC managed 106-6 off their allotted overs after they decided to bat in front of a fair-sized crowd. Devon Allen and Mark Baptise resurrected the innings with a third wicket stand of 48 after Jamal Michael was run out for eight and medium pacer Alphius Bookie trapped Adrian Hinds lbw for nine to leave the score at 26-2.
Allen and Baptiste batted sensibly on a difficult pitch before Allen, who struck a solitary boundary, was caught off left arm spinner Ashmead Nedd for 21. Nedd who maintained a steady line then uprooted the stumps of Baptiste for 23 (2×4) with the score on 83-4. West Indies U15 player Colin Barlow propped up the total somewhat – he cracked two fours, before he was bowled by Nedd for 19. Nedd finished with 3-8 off four overs while Bookie and Qumar Torrington had one each.
Off-spinner Joel Spooner provided TSC with the breakthrough, trapping Sachin Singh lbw for four before Barlow sent back Robin Williams (04) leaving the score on 16-2 as DCC reply got off to a bad start. However opener Romaine Muniram and Raymond Perez added 40 for the third wicket to steady the chase before Perez who struck three fours was brilliantly caught and bowled by Anthony Antonio for 24 off 18 balls. Spooner then picked up two quick wickets to keep TSC in the hunt – he bowled Bookie (04) who missed a straight ball after chipping too early and had Muniram caught for 36 with the score on 77-5. Muniram who timed the ball well faced 38 deliveries and hit one four. Timothy Mc Almont and Need then combined the see their team to safety with an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 30. Mc Almont clobbered one four and two maximums to finish on 21 off just eight balls, while Nedd was on eight. Spooner claimed 3-7 off four overs while Antonio and Barlow had one each.
Muniram was given the man of the match award while Yeudistir Persaud of Everest CC received the best batsman prize. Nedd took the best bowler accolade and Mark Jeffers of Everest CC pocketed the MVP trophy.
President of DCC Alfred Mentore congratulated the players and urged them to continue taking the game seriously. He also spoke of the importance of Education and discipline. Nedd, a former first class cricketer who now coaches at DCC, stated that he was impressed with the talent of the players, adding that he was thrilled to give back to the youths. He also thanked the sponsors.
