On Friday last the Rising Sun Judo Club honoured one of its founding members, Joseph Edmondson, a former national lightweight Judo champ.
Joseph Edmondson (centre front row) displays the certificate he was given by the Rising Sun Judo Club in recognition of his sterling contribution.
Edmondson is a founding member of the club and he was also promoted to the rank of Shodan with ‘ full rights’ on the occasion. Born in Moruca, he began practicing Judo in 1972 and quickly developed, by the mid 70s, a reputation as being one of top lightweights in Guyana. In 1978, he migrated to the Rising Sun Judo club with Sensei David Fraser, Sensei Ellery Fraser and a few others to form the beginning of what was to become a Judo powerhouse locally.
Rising Sun black belt, Mr. David Gomes, a fellow veteran Judoka himself, reminisced at the small ceremony that Mr. Edmondson was one the most feared lightweight Judokas in competition and regular practice due to his preference for groundwork, especially for chokes. Rising Sun senior instructor Sensei Ellery Fraser also said that despite his small stature, Mr. Edmondson was always undaunted at competition level against his opponents even those who were considered more established Judokas than himself and was definitely an asset to any team he represented.
Current Rising Sun instructor Bruce Fraser in closing, deemed the honour and accolade long overdue but the Rising Sun Judo club never really truly had the capacity to honour its past heroes until now, and as such it was only befitting, that Mr. Edmondson be given the honour he has so rightly earned and deserved over the years.
