Alpha battle Pele; Slingerz face off against GFC
By Franklin Wilson
Off to a resounding start so far, the historic Stag Elite League organised by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is set to host its first double header today at the Mecca of the sport in the City, Georgetown Football Club ground today.
It will be an intriguing evening of football with Guyana’s two leading clubs, Alpha United and Slingerz FC both hunting their first win in a league that has at stake, 15M dollars and two places to the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup.
Fans will have the chance to witness former national Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson whom many have written off taking on his former club Alpha United in what is anticipated to be a humdinger of a clash.
Pele is on 3 points having already defeated GFC in the first match of the league at the Leonora Track & Field facility on Friday last and no doubt will be aiming to take another three but will find the going much tougher against an Alpha unit that will again see a number of young players taking up the challenge.
Richardson in tandem with Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant working in the engine room (midfield) looked well against GFC as Omallo Williams who partnered Richardson up front and Deon Alfred showed what Pele is capable of achieving as they are on a path to regaining former pride as one of the best in Guyana.
However, as the match progressed against GFC, Pele showed signs of tiring, GFC turning on the pace which brought them a goal. Against Alpha who will be seeking to cash in on full points today, Pele will have to bring A-game to the GFC sward if they are to keep ‘The Hammer’ from nailing them.
Captain Daniel Wilson will be aiming to be much more effective in this match and will look to forward Kithson Baine, Wayne Ellis and Quincy Madramootoo (defenders), Philbert Moffatt, Clive Matthews Jnr., William Europe and others to carve out a much needed win for them.
The opening salvo between Slingerz and GFC will initially tip in favouor of the former given the quality of players they have on paper and the robust style of play featuring the likes of Captain Tichard Joseph, Vurlon Mills, Colin Nelson, Domini Garnett, Vincentian goalkeeper Winslow McDowall and Dwayne Jacobs among others.
Captain Chad Fernandez will again marshall his forces from midfield with Derrick Carter between the uprights. Home advantage can play a key role in this match even though all the teams can also call GFC home too, given the multiplicity of times they have played there.
The young brigade including David Coates, Kelsey Benjamin, Kurt Johnson and Marvin Carter will all add to the potency of GFC’s attack.
The Stag Elite League train will move to the Tucville ground tomorrow evening for another brace of matches. Home team Fruta Conquerors will square off with giant slayers Monedderlust of West Coast Berbice in the feature game with the curtain raiser between the Guyana Defense Force and Buxton United who both lost their opening matches.
Meanwhile, the Management of GFC has invested a few million dollars to improve the surface, refurbish the main pavilion and a few other amenities.
Club Manager Faizal Khan informed that a sprinkler system, a machine to press down and keep the surface smooth are just a few of the improvements.
The club has also improved and expanded its player development programme which now caters for the Under-11, 15, 17 and first team.
“We are not just focusing on our first team and focusing just on winning. As you know the youngster that scored our goal is just a teenager, we are going with the kids what we didn’t want to do is bring in load of senior players who have been there already, we are giving youngsters a chance. We are in it for the long run.”
