RDE Vibes and Sparta Boss ‘King of the Streets’ Football Tournament… West Demerara teams register upsets
Raiders and Patentia Street Ballers from the West Demerara registered two massive upsets after defeating Sparta Boss and Sophia respectively as play in the inaugural RDE Vibes and Sparta Boss ‘King of the Streets’ Football Tournament continued on Tuesday night in East La Penitence.
Appearing in the final game of the night, the West Side unit edged hosts Sparta Boss 2-1 in sudden death penalty kicks after regulation time failed to break a scoreless deadlock.
Sparta Boss’ Roberto Osbourne, put his team ahead with his successful attempt, but the visitors converted to re-apply the pressure on the hosts and next up was the usually reliable Sheldon Shepherd, but his effort crashed on to the upright.
Raiders pounced on the opportunity to grab the win and they did as the penalty was converted to confirm the upset.
Patentia Street Ballers, perhaps, motivated by Raiders success played a remarkable game to beat Sophia 2-0.
Levi Bradford fired in a brace in the seventh and eight minutes.
Also in winners row was Bent Street needled Cross Street 1-0 with Sheldon Profit 16th minute strike separating the two teams.
Back Circle led by a solitary goal from Kevin Boters after eight minutes beat West Demerara side Brothers United 1-0.
North Ruimveldt survived 2-1 in sudden death penalty shootout against East Coast of Demerara giants Beterverwagting (BV) after regulation time finished in a 0-0 stalemate.
Also claiming a 2-1 win via the sudden death route was East Ruimveldt who beat Plaisance after another scoreless encounter.
In other results, East Bank of Demerara unit Mocha Ballers crushed West Demerara’s Jetty Gunners by a 3-0 margin, while Upsetters did just that to West Back Road, beating them 1-0 and Island All-Stars won by walkover from West Side Ballers.
Action in the tournament is anticipated to resume tomorrow night at the same venue.
The winning team will receive $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third and fourth place finishers collect $150,000, $80,000 and $20,000 respectively.
