Guyana’s newest Track and Field Club, Super Upcoming Runners (SUR) is looking to upset the applecart this weekend when it takes on the more seasoned and established foes at the Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic VI.
Head Coach of the new entity, Carla Rodney believes that the Club can create some waves at the International Track and Field contest, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden.
“We will definitely try our best and like everyone else, keep our eyes on the prize,” Rodney said, with the optimism that defied any limitation. She informed that her athletes are eager to compete at the event and as such had vowed to do their best.
“Our preparations are going ok, some of the kids were out with the flu, but they will be fine, I believe mentally that are ready for this meet because everyone seems to be very hyped and ready to see what they can do in Linden,” Rodney noted.
Up and coming sprinter, Kevin Abbensetts is the club’s ace this weekend. Abbensetts will be up against some of the most senior counterparts, Winston George from Police, Rupert Perry Guyana Defence Force and Jamaicans, Nicholas Maitland and Keno Burrell.
“It is really just to give the new athletes a chance at exposure… for most of them, it’s their first time that they will be taking part at this event, so we just want to go and put our best foot forward and see where we are as a team,” Rodney added.
The Boyce and Jefford Track and Field Classic for the first time will bring four Jamaican athletes to the shores of Guyana. In addition to Jamaica, the competition features athletes from Trinidad, Grenada, The Bahamas and the United States.
