– Pacesetters survive scare
Colts romped to 72-66 win against Pepsi Sonics Saturday night in the Division I category of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) ‘King of the Hard Court’ Championships at Burnham Basketball Court.
Guard, Shelroy Thomas top scored with 20 points while Shane Webster, who is still nursing an injury and is on standby on the national squad, and Rayon Cummings supported with 15 and 14 points respectively for Colts.
Shooting guard, Trevor Smith scored a game high 22 points with Kurt Elias adding 14 points and Jason Squires 10 points respectively. Colts took full advantage of their practice court, which they share with Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters.
Colts outscored Sonics 23-13 in the first quarter with Webster and Cummings leading the charge for the eventual winners. However, Sonics came out hot in the second quarter, outscoring Sonics 19-9 to establish a 32-32 deadlock midway through the game.
The back and forth continued on offence among two quality units until Colts used knowledge of the facility to seize the momentum 49-46 in the penultimate period. Thomas was the architect of the offensive push for Colts.
Thomas dumped in 10 points that included two jumpers from beyond the arc in the last quarter to help secure the win. Elias, who was also named on the national training squad, also added double digits of 10 points down the stretch.
TGH Pacesetters edged Knights 73-67 in the other Division I game. Stephon Gillis poured in 20 points, while Joslyn Crawford and Keith Tute supported with 15 and 13 points respectively for a struggling Pacesetters unit on the night.
Owan Walton scored 18 points while Andrew Mendes added 11 points correspondingly. In the opening U-23 game, Ravens defeated Melanie Patriots via walkover.
The tournament continues at the same venue on Friday with three games slated. In the opening matchup 6pm, TGH Pacesetters will play the University of Guyana Trojans in an U-23 game as the second fixture pits UG Senior team against Melanie Patriots. Knights will play Eagles from 10pm in the featured game. (Edison Jefford)
