After deciding that he no longer wanted to waste the court’s time, Aldhren Adonis, changed his
not guilty plea, to guilty yesterday.
Adonis, first appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, on April 9, and pleaded not guilty to the offences which stated that he had a gun along with ammunition in his possession, without being the holder of a firearm licence.
He pleaded with Magistrate Judy Latchman to impose a light sentencing on him.
Adonis, 35 a security guard of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was given a 48 months jail sentencing and fined $70,000, after he admitted to the court that he had one 9mm pistol in his possession on April 6, at Campbellville.
Further, he confessed that he had five rounds of live ammunition, in his possession on April 6, at the same location.
According to Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, on the day in question at around 19:00hrs, the police were on patrol duties in the area when they received certain information. As a result, they proceeded to Lot 164 Campbellville, Housing Scheme.
Upon seeing the police, the defendant ran away with the firearm in his left hand. He was eventually caught by the police and taken to the Prashad Nagar police outpost, where he was arrested and charged. At the outpost the defendant admitted that the gun and ammunition belonged to him.
Adonis provided the officers with a written statement. In the statement he wrote, “I borrowed the gun from a boy called ‘Police’ in January and I went in the bush with the gun. Today (April 6) I was hanging with friends and I rest the gun in a stash. I later went and collect the gun, then I see the police coming and I run with the gun. The police run behind meh and ketch meh with the gun and bring meh to the station”.
Before sentencing, Magistrate Judy Latchman asked the defendant if he had anything to say but he replied “no”.
The Magistrate considered all the mitigating factors, the fact that the defendant did not waste the court’s time and the seriousness and penalty attached to the offences.
Adonis was given a 48 months jail term on each charge. The sentencing will run concurrently.
