Suriname authorities are investigating an incident involving its police and Guyana Ambassador to the Dutch-speaking nation, Keith George, whose shirt was torn during an altercation on Wednesday.

The De Ware Tijd online news yesterday reported that two officers are being investigated following the incident at the Guyanese Embassy, Henck Arronstraat.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Lackin, confirmed that an incident had occurred. The Surinamese government wants to avoid a diplomatic row.
It appears that the two police officers did not observe diplomatic agreements that concern the jurisdiction of police on the territory of embassies.
Lackin says that he got involved right after he heard that “something” was going on at the embassy. He dispatched a top official to investigate the incident. He could not say exactly what transpired and is awaiting a report of the Minister of Justice and police.
The incident was reportedly triggered after someone attempted to park near the gates of the Guyanese embassy. However, the driver became involved in an altercation with embassy staffers which ended in a struggle. The staff of the embassy finally called the police who came with two men.
The police, according to De Ware Tijd, ventured on to the embassy grounds and demanded that the driver of the embassy accompany them to the police station. It was at this time that Ambassador George objected. This led to another skirmish in which the diplomat’s shirt was torn.
Calm only returned after top officials of Suriname’s Foreign Affairs and police stepped in.
