The level of attendance was poor but that did not affect the quality of play when the action in the Mayor’s Cup Football Championship continued at Monedderlust Ground West Coast Berbice last Saturday evening.
Cougars FC were in a no nonsense mood and dished out a 4-0 drubbing to Rosignol United, while New Amsterdam United (NAU) and Monedderlust battled to an exciting 1-1 finish at regulation time before penalty kicks were needed to separate them. Jamal Joseph (64) scored for Monedderlust, while Adrian Abrams (43) contributed for NAU. The penalty kicks were evenly contested and the former team sunk all of their attempts, while Kevin Layne mistimed kick was blocked by NAU custodian, Jevano DeSantos, and sent New Amsterdam United on to the next round 5-4.
The referees were kept busy as both teams fought for supremacy and Travis William and Leonard Riddock both received yellow cards in the 28th and 58th minutes respectively for mild infringements, while Leonard Adams received a straight red card in the 80th minute after an extremely dangerous tackle.
The Cougars’ score was a true reflection of the one sided battle as that team routed their adversary after successes from Alvin Reynolds (53), Cleroy Joseph (65), Collis Burnette (78) and Sherwin Parris (82). Their striker, Treshawn Moore, received the lone yellow card issued to his team.
The action returned to the city last evening to the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) when Santos FC tackled Mahaica, while Camptown played Ann’s Grove. Those results will appear in tomorrow’s edition.
Meanwhile, football fans on the West Coast Demerara will be treated to two potentially thrilling fixtures when the Guyana Police Force play Haslington starting at 19:00hrs just before the GFC oppose Uitvlugt. These matches will be played at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground.
The winners of the championship will take home off a tidy first prize of one million dollars while the runners up cart off $300,000. The 3rd and 4th place finishers receive $200,000 and $100,000 respectively.
