Owner of Paladin Security Firm, and President of Colts Basketball Club, Michael Singh, will not seek re-election as President of Georgetown’s Amateur
Basketball Association (GABA) Sunday, definitely leaving some big shoes to be filled for the new leader.
Singh announced that he will not be seeking a second term when the association hosts its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Elections, which mean that Georgetown will have a new basketball head following the electoral process at Duke Lodge, Kingston.
However, there is one issue; no one has yet come forward to take the post. If that continues until Sunday, it means that the current administration will have to remain in office until there are some candidates to host the election. An election cannot be held without candidates.
Contacted yesterday for comment on the elections, Singh told Kaieteur Sport that he has received no nomination for various posts to be contested. If this persists on Sunday then the elections have to be voided with the incumbent remaining in office.
Asked why he is demitting office after only one term, Singh was cagey, but stated that expansion in business is getting demanding. He had undoubtedly taken basketball in Georgetown to heights that were refreshing. He will remain Vice-President of Guyana’s Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) under the leadership of Nigel Hinds.
Colts and Pacesetters had nominated Singh for the post when he became President in January of 2013. He was the only nominee and eventually ran uncontested with the nine clubs present at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Library collectively agreeing through vote that he was the man to run basketball in Georgetown.
Singh only came to the fore of basketball administration late in 2012, but was always behind the scenes. He has a deep history growing up in basketball from his high school playing days at Saint Stanislaus College to playing under Phillip George with Colts.
The Entrepreneur told Kaieteur Sport two years ago that rebuilding the image of the GABA and the sport in the largest sub-association is necessary to make the corporate connection for success. Assessing his performance on the basis of that stated mission, it is clear that Singh has managed to galvanise, re-energise and expand basketball in Georgetown.
Among his immediate plans were to get a year of events for every level of basketball, which will help popularise the sport. He believed that once the sport becomes popular again there is going to be a corporate influx to sustain growth and development. Singh definitely accomplished this goal through a host of novel basketball events and initiatives during his tenure.
