The Global Youth Movement Guyana, Berbice Shines, held a People’s Climate March for Global Day of Action in New Amsterdam last weekend. The day of action is observed annually and globally in September.
The Berbice Shines team marched through the streets of New Amsterdam then hosted a rally at State House, New Amsterdam.
This stemmed from the urgent need for countries in the world to highlight the ongoing threat of global warming and climate change. The People’s Climate Mobilization/Global Day of Action is an opportunity for people to take action on climate change everywhere and amplify each other’s voices.
This month, Heads of State are all present in New York City (NYC) for an historic summit on climate change and in New York City there will be an unprecedented climate mobilization – in size, beauty and impact.
According to Berbice Shines, the meeting will not be just about New York or the United States, “this moment will be about us – the people who are standing up in our communities, to organize and confront issues that affect climate change for a just, safe, peaceful world.”
The group marched and proudly waved banners. The group added that one common message that will bombard the world leaders in NYC is that the time for words is long gone.
Media Coordinator for Berbice Shines, Sarah Rambarran, addressed the gathering upon their arrival at State House Lawns. She talked about the ongoing problem of littering in Guyana. “Not only does littering make our lands, roads, and towns/villages look disgusting but it contributes to Global Warming and it’s a problem we can solve on our own by changing our outlook and habits.
“Sure the Government plays a part in maintaining a healthy environment by enforcing stricter legislations and being more active in ensuring that its citizens do not litter but the bottom line is “People cause our litter problem and People can solve it,” she added.
Berbice Shines was also supported that day by the Ebenezer Lutheran Church and Rotaract Club of New Amsterdam. After the march, the group planted trees on the lawns of State House. (Leon Suseran)
