Competition among the senior teams on the East Coast of Demerara got off to a competitive start on Sunday and Monday last, a welcome return for the teams affiliated to the East Demerara Football Association (EDFA).
Ansa McAl under their Stag Beer brand is sponsoring the tournament which has a first place prize of $200,000.
At the Buxton Ground, BV Triumph United waltzed to a 3-1 win over Sparta FC which marched into the lead through a 6th minute goal from Kevin Squires.
BV, an experienced unit, led by elder statesman Delroy Deen went into overdrive against the Haslington based Sparta when Deen himself drew his team level in the 12th minute. Thereafter, Sparta found that it was a difficult proposition to penetrate the BV defensive third while on the other hand, BV were able to penetrate theirs.
While it took some time for BV to finally break the deadlock given the fierce nature of play between the two sides, when they {BVTU} finally did, it was all over. With ten minutes to game time, Paul Kingston found the back of the nets to hand BV the lead for the first time and with four minutes to game time, Under-17 Captain, Ramario Welcome sealed the deal to hand BV a hard fought 3-1 win. In the other game, Buxton Stars and Golden Stars battled to a 0-0 stalemate.
On Sunday, Mahaica Determinators collected full points without breaking a sweat, their intended opponents, Buxton United, failed to put in an appearance.
In the lone game played, Victoria Kings defeated Ann’s Grove by the lone goal of that encounter; veteran Winston Pompey netting in the 75th minute of a closely fought match.
