Minister Anthony commissions Floodlights at DCC
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony lauded the members of the Demerara Cricket
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony officially switching on the lights at the DCC ground.
Club (DCC) and the Guyana Floodlights Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA) for their teamwork when those two bodies launched the installation of Floodlights at the club’s facility in Queenstown Monday night last.
Speaking at a simple ceremony which was held to officially commission the lights, the Minister stated that partnerships like that were hard to form. Anthony wished the Guyanese present a happy 48th Independence Anniversary and hailed DCC for their efforts in developing cricket.
He applauded the GFSCA in making softball an integral part of healthy lifestyles adding that it affords players an additional avenue for indulging in cricket after some may have retired from the higher level.
Anthony stated that sports can be used as a weapon to combat crimes and unite people. The Minister informed that DCC and other organisations can take advantage of the Ministry’s facility which assists sporting bodies in the country in acquiring one million dollars for the development of their entities by virtue of following simple steps which are then produced to the Ministry in order for the loan to be processed.
Earlier, DCC Vice-President Ian John thanked the Minister and the GFSCA for their support. He said that the lights will play an important role in the development of sports and help to keep the youngsters meaningfully occupied.
Meanwhile, GFSCA President Ramchand Ragbeer explained that the historic project took tremendous efforts from both bodies along with the Ministry of Sport in order to be a reality.
The vote of thanks was given by West Indies and Guyana all-rounder Chris Barnwell who expressed gratitude to everyone for making DCC a place where cricket can now grow from strength to strength.
