The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) ‘Nuff cuff injection’ amateur boxing card will move to the Buxton ground, tentatively set for May 31. That’s the word according to GBA President Steve Ninvalle.
Ninvalle told Kaieteur Sport that the last event in East Ruimveldt was a tremendous success based on the attendance and the performance of the boxers and he is positive that it will get better. Ninvalle and the GBA executives had decided to shift programmes to the communities as they sought to inject more impetus in the development of the sport and whip up more support from Guyanese for the young boxers.
The large crowd that came out in East Ruimveldt brought back memories of the former glory days of the sport where amateur boxing attracted a large following, similar to the pro fighters. Of recent cards did not have the attendance level and support they should, hence the GBA’s move to take the sport to the people.
Ninvalle disclosed that the permission will be sought from the Buxton Friendship Playfield Committee, with a letter being dispatched to Chairman Collis Wills tomorrow to get the necessary permission to use the venue.
Buxton has been known to support sporting events and with a champion in the last tournament hailing from that community, they are expected to come out in their numbers and the fans in the East Coast Village are promised much excitement as the young boxers seek to outdo each other. Gyms from around the country will be represented and it is expected that the New Opportunity Corps (NOC), who participated in the East Ruimveldt event, will be present again as the ‘new kids on the block’.
The GBA will be looking to get the backing of sponsors for this and other events. Many including Ansa McAl and Demerara Distillers Limited have lent tremendous support in the past and the association is hopeful for that continued assistance as they seek to develop boxing, unearth new talent and plot a bright future course for the fortunes of Guyana in the sport.
The GBA Boss noted that they are looking to head to Golden Grove in the next edition following May 31 in Buxton and will be putting systems in place for that event shortly as the spread the sport around the country with the ‘Nuff Cuff injection’ programme.
