– citing work commitments
General Secretary of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), Dr. Richard Blair has resigned from the federation, citing escalating responsibilities at work. Dr. Blair was elected this year when the federation held its AGM and Elections.
“When I was approached by the current (GABF) President (Nigel Hinds) for my concurrence to be nominated for the position of General Secretary, I readily agreed because I shared the vision for the return of basketball to the heights I experienced as fan and player in the 1980s. The vision firmly remains but circumstances on the work front have drastically changed… severely affecting my abilities to function effectively in the post,” Blair said in his resignation letter.
He believes that his resignation is in the best interest of the “efficacy” of the federation. He said that he will “remain a loyal fan and ‘veteran’ player of the game” and pledged to do whatever he can outside of holding the office to proliferate the federation’s vision.
Blair said that he read the manifestos of the President, Hinds and GABF Vice-President, Michael Singh in the lead up to the elections and both have inspired him. Blair believes the sport is in good hands and thanked the Executive for their confidence in him.
“I take the opportunity of thanking the Executive and those… who nevertheless contributed to me being elected to the post for their vote of confidence and sincerely hope that the resignation in no way resonates as a rebuff,” he continued in his letter to the federation.
In an email circular, Hinds informed that he accepted Blair’s resignation “knowing that under more permissive circumstances his tenure as General Secretary would have been a great asset to the federation,” but his work commitments have not allowed him to fulfil the functions required for the post of General Secretary.
Hinds said that he looks forward to Blair’s continued support. Dr. Blair is Coordinator for the Caribbean’s Regional Agenda at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). (Edison Jefford)
