– Police sustain lead heading into final day
By Edison Jefford
Tempers flared, emotions ran riot and what was usually a civil competition literally disintegrated into an athletics war yesterday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary where the Police and Soldiers were engaged in the Inter-Services Annual Athletics Championships (ISAAC).
At the end of the second day of competition, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were ahead on 245 points with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) trailing on 199 points as the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was third on 32 points. The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) and City Constabulary occupied the cellar position on 22 points apiece.
Davin ‘Black Boy’ Fraser cruises pass the finish line, comfortably ahead of an impressive field to win his 200m Heat yesterday at ISAAC at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
Three protests were filed with the Jury of Appeal and a baton mishap from GDF spiralled out of control in the 1500m Medley Relay. The soldiers accused Police’s Keith Roberts of knocking the baton out of GDF’s Patrick King’s hands on the 400m leg of the relay.
Police Sergeant, Lyndon Wilson was visibly riled up over the accusation, which the soldiers are claiming may have cost them the relay that the Police won. It was the last of three face-offs at the venue between the Police and the Soldiers yesterday.
It was clear that the usually civil sports contest had disintegrated into a war. The soldiers won the ISAAC title in 2011, while in 2012 the police and soldiers shared the title; it means that the police had not won the completion in the last three years.
Police’s Alita Moore showed why she is regarded as the best female sprinter in the country at the moment when she collected the baton nearly 40m behind on the 200m leg of the Female Medley Relay and sailed pass the leading soldiers to give police the lead.
It was a transition of class as Moore handed to Janella Jonas on the final 400m leg. Jonas held off GDF quarter-mile specialist, Tiffany Smith to give police more points in the competition that has already been reduced to a two-way war between the Police and Soldiers.
It was not the only highlight of day two; earlier, Guyana’s distance running king, Cleveland Forde was ambushed in the Men’s 800m when he focused his attention on Trevor Scotland and forgot a surging Kevin Bayley on the final straight.
Bayley won 1:57.7 to win the race ahead of Forde (1:58.1) and GDF’s, Tyshon Bentick (1:58.6) respectively. Jonas won the female version of the race in 2:31.7, while GDF’s Carlissa Atkinson (2:33.5) and Police’s Nadine Rodrigues (2:37.7) was second and third respectively.
Guyana’s national Javelin record holder, Leslain Baird threw 57.06m for GDF to win the event ahead of teammate, Troy Lewis (51.09m). Police’s Cordell English was third with 50.55m as the soldiers consolidate their position with the top two placing.
Meanwhile, in a precursor to Friday’s final, GDF’s Davin ‘Black Boy’ Fraser warmed up for marquee Men’s 200m final with an impressive 21.8 seconds Heat in damp conditions as his teammate, Akeem Stewart ran 22.0 seconds for second. Police’s, Shawn Semple ran 22.2 secs for third place in the Heat while City Constabulary, Brentnol Henry was fourth.
Olympian, Police’s, Winston George won the other Heat in 22.2 seconds with the GDF’s Patrick King placing second in 22.4 secs and Police’s Keith Roberts third with 22.8 secs. Fire Service’s, Alton Seaforth was fourth in the race.
